ChatGPT Ads launch in the Netherlands on 24 August 2026
OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT Ads to 31 European markets, including the Netherlands. The rollout starts on 24 August 2026 for people using ChatGPT Free and Go. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu remain ad-free, and ads are not shown to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18.
An ad appears as a clearly labelled sponsored card below a ChatGPT answer. It remains separate from the answer, and advertisers cannot pay to shape, rank or change what ChatGPT says. OpenAI does not share conversations, chat history or memories with advertisers.
How ChatGPT Ads work
What the Dutch launch changes
User rollout and advertiser access are separate. Dutch users can begin seeing ads from 24 August, while Dutch businesses may not all be able to open a self-serve Ads Manager account on day one.
Rollout starts on 24 August 2026: The Netherlands is included in the expansion to 31 European markets, with availability reaching users gradually.
Free and Go inventory: Ads are limited to the free and lower-cost plans. Higher-tier consumer and business subscriptions remain ad-free.
Contextual-first in Europe: Initial matching focuses on the topic and intent of the current conversation. Further personalisation requires a separate user choice.
Buying is not fully self-serve yet: Access in new European markets initially runs through OpenAI, agencies and technology partners, with Ads Manager availability expanding by market.
Ads Manager remains in beta: Objectives, bidding, reporting and country availability continue to evolve, so we verify the live options before each Dutch campaign.
GEO remains separate: GEO can build organic visibility in AI answers today, but it is not required for ad eligibility and buying ads does not create an organic mention.
ChatGPT Ads and GEO complement each other
Paid and organic visibility are separate. ChatGPT Ads buy a clearly labelled placement below an answer; Generative Engine Optimisation works towards organic citations or brand mentions inside the answer itself.

How we start
ChatGPT Ads is still a beta channel. We start with a contained test, configure measurement first and scale only when the results justify it.
Check availability and fit
We verify the live country access, industry eligibility, offer and landing-page readiness, then select the available buying route.
Configure measurement
Conversion events, UTM parameters and reporting are in place before media spend starts.
Choose objective and budget
We select reach, clicks or conversion optimisation and agree what the pilot needs to prove.
Build context and creative
We translate customer questions into context hints and create multiple specific, benefit-led headline, copy and image variants.
Launch, learn and scale
We monitor match quality, CTR, CPC or CPM and conversions, increasing spend only where volume and quality support it.
What does it cost to advertise in ChatGPT?
OpenAI supports CPM and CPC buying. Reach campaigns use a maximum CPM bid, while click campaigns use a maximum CPC bid. OpenAI recommends starting CPC campaigns with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click. This is not a fixed price: actual cost is determined by a relevance-weighted auction.
The right test budget depends on market, audience, objective and the volume required for a useful conclusion. We therefore agree a fixed test period, spend limit and decision criteria before launch.
